First off, the PIII is a nice chip, esp. at 1 GHz (my laptop speed) - I
prefer a PIII to a P4 laptop, but preferences vary (esp. on this
list!)...

Second, XP *is* bloated - it does everything all the time, lots of
little things running in the background...

Finally, while processor speed has shot up to 3.x GHz, the supporting
hardware (disk, network, etc.) are evolving at a slower pace...
