Itanium to Remain 32-bit Slug
In other Microsoft news, published reports say that the Intel-touted
Itanium 32-bit speed-up software has been delayed until the second
half of next year. Intel first announced the software ( a new 32-bit
execution layer) when benchmarks showed AMD's 64-bit Opteron
processor soundly spanking Itanium on virtually all 32-bit
applications - which comprise the vast majority of x86-based
computing. In an attempt to respond to the Opteron launch and
excellent performance characteristics, Intel announced that new
software, available in 3-4Q'03 would greatly enhance the 32-bit
Itanium experience. Unfortunately for Intel, they were relying on
their pals at Microsoft to write it?oh-oh. So now they're stuck with
prehistoric 32-bit application performance for the foreseeable
future. Oh well, Microsoft is sure to hit the date next year - there
shouldn't be any more schedule slips, right?
