I suspect that it is bad programming on the part of the java
programmers, since I've seen fast, responsive java programs on machines
much slower than a U1. I used to spend hours and hours worked on stuff
in java on a SS5 170 (one of those wierd IPXs that Mike N. picked up, in
fact) with a basic 8 bit card, and it was usually perfectly fine except
when I did something wrong.
Now, this was pre swing, so maybe that makes a difference.
