I think his original plan at the beginning of the series was for 9,
but I think the slow progression of technology changed that. I do
believe he has sworn that he is the only who will ever make one of
the Star Wars movies, and he will not begin the third set unless he
knows he will be alive to make all of them. I guess he is getting a
little too old to guarantee that. One cannot blame him though, as we
all know excellent examples of a replacement director sucking big
time when the original one is off the job for one reason or another.
