Plextor offers their own refurbished drives through their direct sales
phone lines. The price list at:
http://www.plextor.com/english/products/pdfs/refurb_pricelist.pdf
lists a 17x/40x (CAV) Ultra-SCSI CD-ROM for $69 or UW for $74. I've
used a Plextor 12x (CLV) on SPARC machines with the 512-byte-block
jumper after I pulled it off a PC.

NECs don't work. Some Toshibas work. Every Pioneer and Plextor I've
ever
tried has worked beautifully and even had the 512/2k jumper so that you
could use it on a PC or Macintosh.
I've got a 40x Pioneer in my Indigo2, and, despite the slghtly
nonstandard
form factor (It's just a tiny bit too short, depthwise, making it "fun"
to
extract from the case), I'm very happy with it. At $previousOrkPlace,
we
had a Plextor, and it never gave any problems, either.
