I really rate Zhang Yimou films too, utterly beautiful, I really lack the

I haven't gotten round to watching the latest few yet but the early work,
Raise the Red Lantern, Red Sorghum, Ju Dou etc are wonderful.

Also check out anything by Wong-Kar Wai or Beat Takeshi. Chungking Express or
Sonatine respectively for the best of their wrok IMO.

There's a whole bucket load of decent French, Spanish, Icelandic etc....
cinema too. Then there's Mike Leigh, and Spike Lee and....
