All r4k derived chips are 64bit.  My understanding was that the move to 64
was slow, even though 6.x would never run on anything worse than an r4k.

With mips pro you can compile applications for 64bit on 6.2.  I'm assuming
the same for gcc.

Question, can you tell if the kernel is 64bit?
