actually, it's a 500 series error, not a 404.  i can't figure it out, but for
some reason DNS resolution on the proxy has become spotty.  i put the webserver
in the /etc/hosts of the proxy machine, and that _seems_ to have helped.  maybe
i'll track down why this has happened.
