Ok, so I looked into where the levy that the Canadian government is
being pressured to bring in today. Right now, I can but a decent 50
pack of CD's for around $35 Canadian. This is acceptable for the time
saving when moving massive amounts of data between machines, and in
my efforts to grok Linux. The Register has an article today that
outlines that the lobbyists want a charge of $1.23 per CDR. That
means my previous $35 spindle of 50 CD's boosts to $96.50, plus tax
which is 14%., bringing the grand total to $110 Canadian for 50 CD's.
This would put the cost of 100 CDR's to well over $200. This is only
the beginning.
My question to list members, what would you do if this were presented
to you? I know I will be stock piling CDR's around the end of the
year, and then I will not buy another while this lasts. Ridiculous is
an understatement in my eyes. I have hear of 5 cent, or 50 cent
levies proposed in the past, and assumed these were what Brian was
posting about awhile back, but these numbers are pathetic and
technologically killing.
