A lot of stuff is about that size now, including my Geo tracker. Most
of those motors have 16 valves, fairly high compression heads, and make
around 100 HP, not much different than the ubiquitous GM 2.5L that
showed up in everything from Jeeps (pre-chrysler) and S-10s to every
single compact GM made in the 80s-early 90s, except the GM motor didn't
get as good gas mileage as these new little motors, but they were really
easy to work on, even complete rebuilds could be done by yourself in a
weekend.
