Out of curiosity, if you network the windows machines point-to-point with 
a crossover cable, does this till happen?  If not, then you've isolated it 
to cabling/switch/etc.

I had something similar happen about 5 years ago - turned out the MTU on a 
few of my unix boxes was fscked up. 

In another case, I had to manually set all my NIC's to 10mb/half duplex 
and then work my way up to 100mb/full.  In that instance I had a bad nic.
