For a couple years here in RI I didn't own a car - a motorcycle was my only
vehicle ('82 H-D Sportster).  Not that it isn't dangerous on ice, but I can't
really recall ever riding on ice - and I never missed work due to weather. 
It's possible that ice never accumulated, or I got lucky, but I never ran into
trouble.
