Well, I'll not be moving to minnesota anytime soon ("Not that there's anything wrong with that...") but I appreciate your testing the theory...

The lava is flowing better now, all is right on my desktop (for now)...

Yup, it's the temperature in the room. 

Lamp heats blob, blob rises, blob cools off, blob sinks.  .  .repeat.

If the ambient temp in the room is high enough, the temp in the bottle is
even enough that the blob kind of gets to a steady state and doesn't do much
of anything.

I've empirically proven this theory by taking my Lava Lamp that did the same
thing, cracking a window during a nice Minnesota -20 F cold spell, and
running the Lava Lamp on the windowsill. Worked like a champ <grin>
