On buying from an individual...

I never had problems, But I always made sure that I bought from someone who
seemed to know what was up. One of the best purcheses I ever made was '76
MusicMan StingRay, one of the first 4000 off the production line. I bought
it from a local studio cat and it soon became my main bass.

I also always made it a point to NEVER buy new. Guitars and basses take
several years for them to relize that they are no longer part of a tree. It
takes a good 10 years for an instrument to develop it's own identity.
Everything I bought was 10 years old or older. I would prefer a beat to hell
20 year old bass over a shiny brand new one any day.

My rig back in the day consisted of the '76 MusicMan Stingray, a '75 Ric
4001, and a late 60's P-Bass. Amp wise I had a newish Ampeg SVT all tube
head running into an ancient 8x10 Ampeg cabinent, the kind with the original
48 ohm speakers. Soundmen either hated(couldn't control my sound) or loved
me(didn't have to worry about my sound).

Sometimes I miss those days...

Chad
