i will admit, I never understood that either.  BTW, the "Typical" mac
resolutions were:

13"-14" - 640x480
15"-16" - 832x624
17"-19" - 1024x768
20" +   - 1152x864 (I think)

The idea, of course, was to keep it as close to 72dpi as possible.

Always messed with my head.
