[geeks] Compaq Proliant boxen trivia...

So, you pulled the original card and replaced it with the Matrox? I'll have to try that - everytime I pulled the card I got errors... Maybe I need to just *add* the new card, or try the other part of the PCI bus...

I've been very happy with the box so far, my biggest complaint is the video... It is a nice, quiet SCSI-based system.

I've ripped out the original CPU heatsink, aded a second CPU with a pair of CPU fans, dropped a 18 Gig HD inside (but never powered it up - I need to reset the SCSI ID, realized that after put the box together). I have 128 Meg RAM inside (1x 64 Meg and 2x 32 Meg, so one empty slot) and find that to be plenty...

I have started working on cleaning up the basement, (I am simply starting in one corner and sorting everything as I come into contact with it), and when I am all done, the Compaq will probably be my main desktop PC - the 1 GHz killer machine (that I still haven't put together) will probably go in the basement, hangign on one side of the two inputs to a Sun 21" monitor ;^)

That card is dog slow. What I did to make this Proliant 800 "Workgroup Server"
into a "Workstation" (after all it is in a Desk Pro case) is add the second CPU,
actually remove the single CPU and replace with a matched pair, add 64 MB
o' memory, Matrox Millenium 4 MB card, and a nice reliable old Sound
Blaster 16 Vibra. Plugged my Burner in the SCSI port on the back and tossed a
Red Hate 7.0 load into it.

The only other plans I have are to replace the 4x IDE CD-ROM with a faster one.

I have never been a fan of x86 but I have to admit this is a very pleasant
machine to use as an every day workstation. More than enough power to do what I
need. the Matrox card gives nice snappy screen draws and the rest works like a
champ. Even good performance on compiles and such.
