Russian Language Support package enables Russian language in console (alphanumeric) and graphical (X-window) applications in SCO OpenServer Release 6.0.0 Maintenance Pack 3.

Please read this document entirely. It contains information that you will need during and after installing the package.

1. Changes from the previous version

The Russian Language Support package is intended for installation on SCO OSR6 with Maintenance Pack 3 and contains the updated files for correct installation and working of Russian, and also KDE 3.5.6 environment localization files.

2. Downloading and unpacking

The package is available to download free of charge from the OpenServer 6.0.0 download web page at:

Download the archive, copy it into server and unpack into temporary directory e.g. /tmp.

3. Before Installing

3.1. Supported releases

This package may be installed on the following operating system releases:

  1. SCO OpenServer Release 6.0.0

In addition, the follwing software is an obligatory pre-condition:

  1. SCO OpenServer Release 6.0.0 Maintenance Pack 3

This RLS release may be installed either on a fresh OSR6+MP3 or as an upgrade to the previous RLS version. If you have previous version of RLS installed, it will become unoperational after MP3 install. Do not deinstall previous RLS version, just install this release following this instruction and RLS version will be updated in the process.

3.2. Internal charset

Decide which character set will be used internally as default on your system. Internal charset is the way Russian letters are stored in programs memory. If a program doesn't perform additional conversion then it's also the way Russian text is stored in files, transmitted over network etc.

The following Russian charsets are supported:

CP866

Cyrillic encoding used by MS-DOS operating system. (Called OEM by Microsoft.) Use this encoding if you plan to work with legacy data coming from MS-DOS era.

Synonyms: cp866, IBM866, 866.

CP1251

Cyrillic encoding used by Windows operating system. (Called ANSI by Microsoft.) Use this encoding if you plan to work with data coming from/to Windows PCs.

Synonyms: cp1251, windows-1251, WIN1251, 1251.

KOI8-R

Cyrillic encoding used by Unix/Linux applications, also the standard for email in Russian language. Use this encoding if you plan to work only with Unix/Linux data.

Synonyms: koi8-r.

ISO8859-5

This encoding isn't used in Russia but you may encounter it in a program developed abroad.

3.3. Graphic environment

SCO OpenServer 6 comes with two graphical environments:

  1. OpenServer Desktop provides limited Russian language support. It can be used for tasks like server administration. Embedded internet browser Mozilla supports Russian language.

  2. KDE Desktop fully supports Russian language. You can run arbitrary Russian X-window applications within KDE.

Decide whether you need graphical environment and whether you are going to run Russian applications. In case of positive answers to both questions switch grahical environment to KDE.

4. Installation and Setup

Installation, setup and removal should be performed by root.

4.1. Installation

  1. Start the SCO Admin and then Software Manager.

  2. From the Software menu, select Install New.

  3. Select the current host and press Continue.

  4. Select Media Images and press Continue.

  5. Enter the absolute pathname to the directory containing files from downloaded archive, e.g. /tmp. Press OK.

  6. Press Install to start installation.

  7. When installation is complete, press OK.

  8. Exit Software Manager by selecting Host and then Exit.

4.2. Setup

It is recommended to peform setup immediately after installation, yet you are free to do it later or repeatedly to change settings.

Important

Simple installing the package without performing setup will only affect screen font loading but will not change language settings.

  1. From SCO Admin, start the System Administrator and then System — International Settings Manager.

  2. From menu Settings choose Codeset — Internal and pick up internal charset.

  3. From menu Settings choose Codeset — Console and pick up console charset: IBM866.

  4. Specify Laguage: ru_RU.

  5. Assign Keyboard: ps.ru_alt.rus to switch between Russian and English by Alt-Shift or ps.ru_ctr.rus to switch by Ctrl-Shift.

  6. From menu Settings — Users, choose users from top list to replace lenguage settings, then choose ru_RU from second list. Then press OK button.

  7. Save with File — Save. Press OK in responce to the message Please shutdown and reboot system to ensure changes take effect.

  8. Reboot the system with SCO Admin or by any other way that you may prefer.

4.3. Changing graphical environment

To start using KDE graphical environment a user should create a file in the home directory named .xsession containg the following line: 

/opt/kde/bin/startkde

As a result, after user supplied his name and password as a responce to graphical console screen prompt, KDE will start. At first start the following regional settings should be set up: Country — Eastern Europe/Russia, Language — Russian. Keyboard switches between Russian and Lation by Ctrl-Shift.

4.4. Removal

  1. Start the SCO Admin and then Software Manager.

  2. Select Russian Language Support in the Installed Software window. Make sure it selected (highlighted and/or have an asterisk). From the Software menu, select Remove.

  3. When removal is complete, press OK.

  4. Exit Software Manager by selecting Host and then Exit.

5. Usage Notes

5.1. General localization information

  • SCO OpenServer 6 includes programs from SCO OpenServer 5 and SCO UnixWare. They use different localization schemes: former depend on /etc/default/lang while latter on /etc/default/locale. Locale data files are also placed differently. The package update both localization systems.

  • SCO UnixWare Localization scheme assumes that environent variable LANG is set. Setup procedure modifies /etc/profile file to set up this variable in accordance with specified internal charset.

5.2. Alphanumeric console

  • Screen font is loaded by loadfont, loading via vidi is also supported for compatibility with OpenServer 5.

5.3. Terminal input-output mapping

  • Alphanumeric console keyboard and screen use IBM866 charset. Translation from IBM866-encoded symbols entered from keyboard to internal charset and back from internal charset to screen encoding IBM866 is performed by mapchan. Setup procedure writes appropriate settings for virtual screens /dev/tty01 — /dev/tty15 into /etc/default/mapchan file.

  • If remote terminal or terminal program with charset IBM866 that doesn't translate input-output is used, then use the the following command to set up input-output mapping: 

    mapchan -f /usr/lib/mapchan/internal_charset/cons.866

    For KOI8-R terminals (xterm in particular): 

    mapchan -f /usr/lib/mapchan/internal_charset/xterm.KOI8-R

    For KDE Konsole terminal mapchan is called automatically.

    If terminal program performs mapping itself then disable mapchan: 

    mapchan -n

5.4. Files conversion

Use iconv utility to convert files from one encoding to another: 

iconv -f from -t to file

Where from — original encoding, to — requested encoding.

Russian encodings supported:

  • cp866
  • cp1251
  • koi8-r
  • utf-8
  • iso8859-5

5.5. Printing

Normally, printer Russian fonts are CP866-encoded. Use iconv with appropriate arguments as a filter to translate from other charsets.

6. Testing

  1. Run date command and check that day of the week and month are printed in Russian.

  2. Run ls -la command and check that files timestamps are printed in Russian.

  3. Start a text editor and enter arbitrary Russian text.

    • Make sure that all symbols are entered and displayed on the screen exactly as they are marked on the keyboard.
    • Check letters, digits, punctuation marks.
    • Check CapsLock switch, symbol entry with pressed Shift and Alt.
    • Check arrow keys and functional keys.
    • Check switching between virtual screens with Ctrl-F1...F12.

  4. Save file and close the editor.

  5. Perform a circular translation of created file from one encoding to another. If for example your internal charset is set to CP866 then run the following commands: 

    iconv -f cp866 -t cp1251 file >file.cp1251
iconv -f cp1251 -t koi8-r file.cp1251 >file.koi8-r
iconv -f koi8-r -t cp866 file.koi8-r >file.cp866

  6. Compare original and resulting files, there shoud be no differences: 

    diff file file.cp866
