    Java Runtime Environment^TM 1.1.8_005 for SCO^® Operating Systems

The Java^TM Runtime Environment Release 1.1.8_005 for SCO Operating Systems, also known as JRE 1.1.8 for SCO, package name jre118, matches the Sun product configuration of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). It is the minimum standard Java platform for running Java programs and contains the Java virtual machine, Java core classes, and supporting files. The JRE does not contain any of the development tools or classes that pertain only to a development environment. The JDK 1.1.8 for SCO Release Notes include a section describing the JRE and should be read prior to installing the jre118 package.

The jre118 package is by default installed in /usr/jre/, with that actually being a symbolic link to /opt/jre-1.1.8/. However, it is possible for an ISV or system administrator to change where the JRE is installed. See the JDK 1.1.8 for SCO Release Notes for details.

Note again that the JRE package is intended for use by ISVs; if you are an end user, you should simply use the regular jdk118 package (and jdk118pls package if desired) instead, which despite its "development kit" name also includes everything necessary for a Java runtime environment as well as for a Java development environment. These packages are available for download at http://www.sco.com/download/ under Java Development Kit, Release 1.1.8 for SCO Operating Systems.

Supported Platforms

The JRE 1.1.8 for SCO product will run on the following versions of SCO operating system platforms, with the indicated provisos:

• UnixWare^® 7 Release 7.1.1
  • requires ptf7410h or higher for libthread supplement

• SCO OpenServer^TM Release 5.0.5 and Release 5.0.6
  • only with version 7.1.1 OSRcompat package
  • no native threads

Installation

The JRE 1.1.8 for SCO is available on the download page as a compressed datastream image. Once you have downloaded the image to a preferred installation directory, perform the following steps as root:

1. Change to the installation directory and uncompress the file:

   cd  /Tmp
   uncompress  jre118.ds.Z

2. If you are installing the JRE on OpenServer 5, you should first determine if you have the UDK Compatibility Module for OpenServer (package name OSRcompat), version 7.1.1, already installed on your system. To do this, enter:

   pkginfo -l OSRcompat

   If there is no OSRcompat package installed, or you have an older version, you need to get it from either the 7.1.1 UDK CD-ROM (found in the SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.6 media kit) or from the SCO web download site at http://www.sco.com/download/. To remove an older version, enter:

   pkgrm OSRcompat

   To install a new compatibility module, enter:

   pkgadd -d /full_dir_path/OSRcompat

3. On either UnixWare 7 or OpenServer, install the JRE (be sure to use the full pathname):

   pkgadd  -d  /Tmp/jre118.ds
   

4. When you you have completed the installation, you will probably want to remove the download package from the installation directory.
